The Northern Caribou Recovery Implementation Group for North-Central BC

The Northern Caribou Recovery Implementation Group (RIG) for North-Central British Columbia was first formed to develop a plan (Click to view, 2MB PDF) recommending management actions that create self-sustaining populations of “threatened” woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) of the northern ecotype in north-central BC.  Those herds are locally known as the following:

  • Takla
  • Scott
  • Wolverine
  • Chase

The RIG first met officially in December of 2003 followed by an organizational meeting in January of 2004.  The first full year of work was planned in April 2004 and activities then focused on:

  • A Terms-of-Reference,
  • Membership,
  • A boundary for the recovery planning area, and
  • Development of a draft Recovery Action Plan.

A great deal of work and investigation has been conducted in this region to determine the factors affecting these caribou populations. Eventually, these studies and the work of the RIG led to completion of the plan in March 2007.  The team now oversees stewardship projects that support management and recovery of the herds.  The team also meets annually to review and recommend ongoing or new research ventures.  Please browse through the rest of this website to learn more about the studies completed and underway, the members of the RIG, the tools developed to forecast habitat supply, and the proposed recovery actions.
