Background

In Canada there are three sub-species of caribou:

  1. Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou)
  2. Barren-Ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus)
  3. Peary Caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi)

The federal government has classified all herds of woodland caribou in the Southern Mountains National Ecological Area of British Columbia as THREATENED (likely to become endangered if limiting factors are not reversed).  Under the Species at Risk Act, there is a legal requirement to develop a recovery strategy for all species that are Threatened or Endangered.  As such, two technical advisory committees were formed to develop recovery strategies for caribou in British Columbia, and numerous Recovery Implementation Groups (RIGs) were formed to implement the strategies.  This website focusses on the 3 RIGs of central BC.
