Since 1998, there has been, and continues to be, a joint research initiative of the BC Ministry of Environment and forest licensees in north-central British Columbia. The research, now led and managed by Wildlife Infometrics Inc., was to examine the ecological interactions among caribou, moose and wolves in the Wolverine, Chase, and Scott herds. The project is locally known as the Omineca Northern Caribou Project (ONCP).
From 1996-1999 researchers from the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) employed a multi-scale behavioural approach to understanding the movements of caribou in the Wolverine herd.
The Industrial Forest Service (IFS) and the Ministry of Environment (MoE) also examined habitat use patterns of caribou in the Takla herd.
Starting in the early 1990’s, the Peace Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (PWFWCP) conducted telemetry-based studies on the Chase and Wolverine herds.
